STATEMENT OF ATTORNEY GENERAL MARTHA COAKLEY REGARDING THE ...

BOSTON – Today, Attorney General Martha Coakley issued the following statement regarding the State Insurance Commissioner's decision in this year's auto insurance rate proceeding.

"As we testified in May, we have concerns about whether the market in Massachusetts is prepared for rates to be set by competitive pricing at this time. We will await further details and regulations from the Commissioner as she has promised. The Attorney General's Office will be active in the regulatory process to ensure that the regulations protect consumers."

"The role of the Attorney General's Office in the proposed new competitive rate-setting system will be to advocate for consumers on an insurer-by-insurer basis as carriers submit their proposed rates to the Commissioner for approval, as opposed to the current system where we have advocated for a lower standard rate for all carriers on an industry-wide basis. We are committed to carefully reviewing each of these submissions and taking action as needed to protect consumers and ensure that all drivers have access to affordable and adequate insurance coverage."

ASIA MARKETS: Most Asian Markets End Higher, Surviving Volatility

Most Asian stocks survived intraday volatility to advance Friday, with Chinese issues ending at a record high, but Japanese shares were a mixed bag as gains in exporters such as Sony Corp. were matched by losses for banking majors such as Mizuho Financial Group.

An overnight rally on Wall Street and bargain hunting in stocks, following a sell-off Wednesday on concerns risks related to global credit markets were spreading to Asia, led the gains after most markets faced a roller-coaster ride during the session.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 indexslipped a modest 0.03% to end at 16,979.86, unable to stay about the psychologically important 17,000-point level, after it hit an intraday high of 17,102.07 during the session.

The broader Topix indexrose 0.2% to 1,672.54.
